Abney Park opened in 1840, as a non-conformist Victorian garden cemetery and arboretum and over 200,000 people are buried in the 32 acre site, from music hall stars to abolitionists and politicians. Once full the site was left to grow wild allowing a mysterious and romantic atmosphere to develop.
A charitable Trust which was set up in 1991 to conserve the site and make it accessible to the whole community offers free environmental education, NVQ training, heritage skills and volunteer workshops as well as open days and guided walks.
